 I wish that I knew! 
I'm very reluctant to use the word friend to a third party, and  I often find myself correcting "a friend of mine" with "more an acquaintance, really".
Is it hypocritcal of me to describe someone as a friend in the second person (by way of thanks for a favour) when I don't really know him/her very well?
